A few definitions

Time
is the time signature of a song. For us, that ususally means 3/4 or 4/4.

Tempo
is the speed at which the song is played. Any song can be played slow or fast–your choice!

A metronome
is a device to mark the tempo with a loud, steady “tick.” Use it for practice, to keep you steady, and develop a rock-solid sense of rhythm.

I really like a wind-up, old-fashioned style metronome, like this one from Amazon.

But as you can see from this page at Amazon, there are sorts of new, electronic models that are more portable and less expensive (in some cases).
